138- Twisting the Tale

Look at that, some proper divergance from the source-material. It's about time.

On a mostly unrelated note, I've been re-reading A Feast for Crows roughly in time with the series (at least in regards to Cersei & Arya's stories, which seems to be the only ones following the book's path directly), and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I think the book suffers from a lack of fan-favorites, and thr introduction of the Greyjoy and Martell storylines, so late in the story can seem a bit jarring. However, re-reading the book with a better knowledge of the wider world, it's really very impressive. Aside from the fact that it's very female centric (30 female POV chapters to 19 male), with great emphasis on the role of women in Westeros (in Brienne, Cersei, Asha & Arienne's chapters), there's a shift of focus to how the war of the five kings has affected the lowborn citizens of the Seven Kingdoms. Despite Brienne's story being mostly aimless wandering through the Crownlands, there's a lot of good stuff in there about how the ordinary peasants don't care who's in power, so long as the realm is at peace again.
It may not be the book the fans wanted, so soon after the Red & Purple Weddings, the Viper's duel & a certain promotion up north, but it's definately the book George RR Martin wanted to write.

Then again, it's very easy for me to say that. I read books three, four and five back to back over the course of a year, rather than a decade.
