113- Whispers and Rumour

I realise this doesn't have anything to do with Game of Thrones so feel free to ignore this annotation if you want.

Since it's return from a mid-seson break a couple of weeks ago1 I've been getting back into the Walking Dead. I mainly watch it to see how it compares to the comics (which I greatly enjoy), and to keep up with what people online are raging about now. I think the dialog is better on the Show, and they have more space to flesh out their characters, but they're really weird about who stays around and who gets killed off.

MAJOR SPOILERS for The Walking Dead Season 5 (and previous) & for the comics already overtaken by the show.

Take Tyreeses death. In the comics, he's captured by the Govenor and brought before Rick and the survivors in the Prison to be executed with Michonne's sword. It's an iconic moment, and is a defining moment of Michonne's character (It's worth noting she was a lot closer to him in the comics). He was one of the first people to join the group once they left Atlanta, and so his death was a sign that everything was about to go horribly wrong (which it did). In the series, his role is forfilled by Herschel, which makes for some interesting situations with Maggie (which I'm all for).

However, when it comes to Series 5, and they want to make an impact to the start of the second half of the season, Tyreese gets bitten, dies and is abandonned in the space of about 5 minutes. sure, it's a good reminder of how fragile the group is and that you can never let your guard down, but it didn't really feel like an apropriate send off for such a major Survivor.

This ties into the infamous one-in, one-out policy, regarding black male characters. Morgan makes an inpact in the first episode, but is quickly forgotten in favor of T-Dog; who was a minor, but persistant survivor until season 3, where he died in the same episode Oscar was offered a place in the group. Oscar dies in the attack on Woodbury just before Tyreese betrays the Govenor and joins the Survivors. In a departure from the theme, Bob is introduces between seasons and now we have two black, male characters! ...Until he is quietly bumped off to make was for Gabriel in series 5. As soon as Noah left with Rick it only seemed a metter of time before Tyreese kicked the bucket.

Good thing there don't seem to be any POC in Alexandria.

Rant continues wednesday.

1 What's the deal with breaking the series in half like that? It allows for more cliffhanger moments but means you only get a handful of stories at a time.
